As part of its effort to know people's opinion about different genres of music, Google has released Music Timeline chart the rise and fall of different musical genres in terms of their relative popularity
Does Rock or Pop rule your day, and you can rattle off the names of the members of bands such as The Beetles, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Stooges and The Rolling Stones in one breath? If your answer is âYes', the Google Music Timeline is just for you.
Music Timeline is a recently released visualisation, created by Google's research department, which attempts to chart the rise and fall of different musical genres in terms of their relative popularity.
The chart begins in 1950 and reflects data about what Google Music users have in their music collections, crossed with an album's genre and release date. It shows that Jazz was pretty much the only thing going in the 1950s. Then, you see the rapid rise of Rock in the 1960s and Hip-Hop by the 1980s. Zoom in to the Metal genre to the Thrash Metal subgenre, and you'll notice it increase in popularity in the early and mid-1980s, when Metallica and Slayer were basically inventing the style.
The idea behind the Music Timeline is to understand how people listen to music. It helps reflect what people today think of music from earlier decades.
