Meet the artist whose exhibition will offer a glimpse of rural and urban life

Artist Shagufta Mehdi's tryst with art started early in life as she was born to a family that was distinctly inclined towards the fine arts. Growing up in Mahdi Bagh Colony in Nagpur, tradition, art and culture were always in abundance and creativity was highly encouraged and appreciated. Mehdi's biggest inspiration has been Molai Yakub Saheb, an internationally acclaimed artist. "I was inspired by the senior artist as he had taught my father and uncle as well," she said.u00a0u00a0

The medium she prefers is watercolours and acrylic. The human form and Indian culture form the themes of most of her paintings. You can see the use of vibrant colours and a fluidity characterised by strong brushstrokes. "Art is a big part of my life. It is an extension of who you are and is an indication of how you perceive art. It's like a language of its own," she said.

Her current collection of works, Desi Musings draws inspiration from the rich fabric of Indian culture. "You can see a mixed collection here depicting a mishmash of rural and urban life," she adds. Recently one of her paintings was auctioned in Baton Rouge, LA, for a charity that aids wildlife rehabilitation. At the event she shared the platform with renowned artists to the like of Paul Jackson and Carol Carter.
