If she isn't taking your calls: She isn't that busy, and even if she was busy but liked you enough, she'd make time for you. If she texts you in reply to more than two calls and if she takes ages to reply to your text messages, it's loud and clear that you aren't priority. "That's the first thing I'd do, I guess," adds 26 year-old media professional, Shreya Dasgupta. "I would not take calls or reply with just one SMS in return for 10 gushy SMSes."
She's too busy to go out with you: Is she always 'working late'? Or is she too ill to go out for dinner or too sick from last night's binge drinking to go out for coffee? PR professional Priyanka Roy, 29, admits to feigning an illness as the perfect excuse to avoid going out with someone. "Hopefully, if I'm ill enough a number of times, he'll get the hint and back off," she laughs.
She's not laughing: Laughter is a form of flirtation. If she's not laughing, not only does she not find you funny, she can't even be bothered to pretend that she does. If you can't seem to crack her up, it's best that you move on.
If she maintains physical distance: "The limits of my own physical space varies with how much I like them," says 25 year-old copy editor Avantika Rao. Does she slide away or take a step back when you're around? "I'm uncomfortable if I can tell a guy likes me and am not interested.
So, even if I had to hug him, I wouldn't be able to manage more than a one-armed hug," admits Avantika. Sometimes it's not even the distance but the way she's facing you. "Body language speaks volumes. If she's avoiding facing you or her stance clearly says she's not interested, read the signs," says relationship therapist Ameeta Sanghavi Shah.
The eyes don't have it: Not maintaining eye contact is another sign, adds Ameeta. "Eye contact tends to be more frivolous in nature. She'll glance around, check her phone, look away at people passing by," she adds. But what if she's just shy? "There isn't a definite way to tell if a girl isn't interested.
Disinterest will be spelled out by a combination of signs like leaving early or not talking about personal details. All these little things add up," she observes.
Sometimes though, men are still too involved in the chase to wake up and smell the roses. Or in this case, the lack thereof. "Some get so involved in wooing the girl and communicating how they feel, they forget to look for the girl's reaction."
Which is when girls are forced to take drastic measures. "I'd even pretend to be drunk and blurt out that I don't like the guy. I'll apologise later, of course. But thankfully, the damage would finally have been done," laughs Priyanka.
The Jen-Jon sagaActress Jennifer Aniston and talk show host Jon Stewart recently spoke about their awkward first date. Aniston appeared on The Daily Show with host Jon Stewart, and reminisced about a not-so-romantic Italian meal in New York City that happened more than a decade ago.
Stewart began, "I asked you out. We went out to an Italian restaurant and it was lovely. Here's what was nice about it: you brought so many of your friends. And I remember thinking, she's so excited about being on a date with me she wants me to get to know her posse."
Aniston, though, has a different take on things. It didn't even count as a date for her. "If I remember correctly, wasn't it sort of like, 'Hey, a group of us are going out, do you want to join?' ", she laughed.
