If music makes your world go round, celebrate your raison d'etre today, on world music day

If you are the sorts who plugs in your headphones the first opportunity you get, today is the day to give back the world of music, the appreciation it deserves. June 21, observed as World Music Day or F te de la Musique, is celebrated in countries all over the world.

Run a quick search on Wikipedia and you will find out that the idea first took shape in 1976 when American musician Joel Cohen wasu00a0 employed by the national French radio station France Musique. Cohen proposed an all-night music celebration at the moment of the summer solstice. The idea was taken up by French Music and Dance director Maurice Fleuret for Minister of Culture Jack Lang in 1981 and first took place in 1982. The idea is to promote music to amateurs in the way of free, open-to-all gigs, organise street festivals and enlist those not quite in the know, into the massive music community.

Though we might not have an assembly-line of free gigs in the city, here are a few events to attend this week and celebrate the world of music.
