Mulund might be the abode for the restaurateur who likes to play safe. Eateries continue to blossom across this central suburb despite offering predictable fare, with the exception of a handful of intriguingly named concoctions to spice up mundane menus. In spite of glitzy restaurants offering varied cuisine in the area, a sizeable number continue to favour paisa-vasool haunts, which is precisely why our visit to Plate and Spoons, another chip off the same block, was met with much trepidation.

Tandoori Paneer Pizza

The breezy location (overlooking the eastern limits of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park boundary), compact and practical interiors (a ceiling-to-floor mirror added to the spacious vibe), both ensured that we didn't hit sulk mode. Plate and Spoons is a snack haven -- so don't step in expecting bow-tied attendants chaperoning you to an u00a0 la carte or fine-dining experience.

The menu boasts of the usual suspects -- chaats, vada pav-samosa variations, tikkis, pizzas, sandwiches, frankies and a long list of juices and shakes. There's no room for the calorie-conscious here -- cheese plays a leading role across sections. The Dahi Aloo Tikki Chaat (Rs 40) and Tandoori Paneer Pizza (Rs 75) pepped up our mood when it showed up, in ten minutes flat. The tikkis -- laced with slightly sweetened curd -- were tasty. The paneer in the pizza was fresh, but we barely managed to savour it; the generous bed of cheese made us want to rechristen it Tandoori Cheese Pizza. Also, our molars got an unsuspecting workout, courtesy the tough pizza base.

Chilled, sweet respite came in the form of Litchi Crush (Rs 45) and Fresh Lime Soda (Rs 30). The Litchi cooler was refreshing and countered the blistering mercury levels outside, to an extent. Keen to bite into a tried-and-tested Mumbai special, we asked for the Cheese Frankie, only to be informed politely that it wasn't available. So we opted for the Mumbai Grill Sandwich (Rs 60). It didn't disappoint. Plate and Spoons is ideal for the yuppie, veggie snack-loving junta, who prefer their paisa-vasool, regular fare, minus frills and surprise.
