While designer duo David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore's designs are available in Mumbai, if you're in the mood to splurge on their latest loungewear collection that is made up of coordinated robes, dressing gowns, eye masks, wash bags and laundry bags, you might need to jet across to Harrods in London.
"This spring, Harrods opened a new luxury home section in their store, and they were aware of our work. We were invited to do a collection that would be exclusive to the store. They were looking at special pieces that would fit into their luxury home concept. We created a co-branded line, which means that it will be available only at Harrods," reveals Abraham.
Their brief was to create a subtle but luxurious line and hence the duo has used silk and wool extensively with different techniques such as appliqué and embroidery for embellishment. The colour palette comprises of ivory and white, white on white, chocolate brown and black. One of the robes available is based on a design that they had exhibited at London's Victoria and Albert Museum in 2006. This was a part of the Global Local exhibition, which showcased contemporary Indian designs from around the world.
When asked about the best part about this venture, Abraham elaborates, "We could use the best quality of fabrics without worrying about the costs. Some of the biggest stores in the world sometimes work in tight parameters. Here, we weren't constrained."
If a trip to London to buy a bathrobe sounds outlandish, there's good news for fans of the duo's work. They will shortly launch a home décor line at Le Mill in the city.
