Dolphy's in powai had better get its basics right before going to town with its Mexican cuisine tag
One has to barely settle down at one of the tables inside Galleria Mall's food court in Powai that a minimum of five menus get thrust in your face by eagerly waiting attendants from the many eating joints that make up this section. Don't be overawed by this burst of enthusiasm. And don't say we didn't warn you.
Veg Quesadillas
After looking through the stash in our hands, we realised that none of these belonged to the eatery that we had come looking for. We spotted Dolphy's, which specialises in Mexican cuisine, and placed our order at the counter in quick time. We stuck to the typical fare -- Grilled Quesadillas (Rs 65) and a Chicken Enchiladas (Rs 145). At the counter, the attendant recommended the Mexican Lemonade (Rs 30), which according to him would compliment the food rather nicely.u00a0
Ten minutes later, the food arrived. When we asked our attendant to identify the chicken dish from among the two at our table, he pointed out to one of the dishes on the panel displaying Dolphy's menu and said, "I guess that". Now, we know the names of the dishes may be a tad difficult to pronounce, but we sincerely hope the attendants are aware of the names of the dishes they serve. Minus marks. Bravely, we went ahead and dug into the fare.u00a0
Quesadillas, which are tortillas containing cheese mainly comprised of a filling of beans, tomatoes and a few other ingredients. It was a tad too sweet for our palate. The accompanying salsa sauce was disappointing too. The Mexican Lemonade tasted like Jaljeera, spicy with a lemony flavour to it.
The Chicken Enchilada was the saving grace at the table. We decided to go ahead and give the menu another shot -- Mexican Rice with Salsa and Cheese (Rs 110). We shouldn't have. The rice dish, which came served with loads of corn and peas tasted a bit like pulao. The peas taste as if they were just taken out from a frozen pack and hastily added to the rice. The dish was devoid of flavouring and spices and didn't appeal at all.
We did not have the courage to experiment any further. In hindsight, the best part about the place was their lightning-quick service. There are too many things that Dolphy's needs to get right, before they can greet patrons with a genuine Ola.
