Let's compare the specs of both the cars
Mini, the moment we hear the name of this automobile manufacturer, we think of the small three-door cute hatchbacks. However, the company offers much bigger and practical cars now. The largest Mini, the Mini Clubman made its global debut in June last year and now has been launched in the Indian market. Although the Clubman belongs to Estate segment and has no direct rival, but with a price tag of Rs 37.90 Lakh, it can snatch some market share of Mercedes-Benz's compact SUV the GLA200. Let's compare the specs of both the cars.
Dimensions
As we already know, the Clubman is an estate while the GLA is a compact SUV, thus the GLA is longer by 164mm, wider by 4mm and taller by 53mm than the Clubman. The GLA has a wheelbase of 2699mm while the Clubman's wheelbase is 2670mm long. The GLA also has 61 litres of additional boot space as compared to the 360 litres of the Clubman. On paper, the GLA seems much more spacious than the Clubman. However, all those extra dimensions make the GLA 225 kg heavier than the Clubman.
Performance
Both the GLA and Clubman are powered by a 2.0-litre, four cylinder, petrol engine. However, the one in Clubman produces 192PS of power and 280Nm of torque while the one in GLA produces 183.5PS of power and 300Nm of torque. Both the Clubman and the GLA have a similar top speed of 228 kmph and 225 kmph respectively. The Clubman reaches 100 kmph from a standstill in just 7.2 seconds while the GLA is just 0.4 seconds behind at 7.6 seconds. The GLA sports a 7-speed automatic transmission, while an 8-speed automatic does its duty on the Clubman. The Clubman has a slightly higher top speed and better acceleration than the GLA and since the Clubman is lighter, it should have better driving dynamics.
Features
Although both the cars fall in the same price range, the Clubman is the new car here. They have similar standard features, however, the Clubman offers additional optional features to choose from. Also, the interiors of the Clubman are more eye catching with the analogue gauges, flip switches and circular central console.
Considering the above-mentioned aspects, the GLA looks more promising in terms of practicality as compared than the Clubman. However, the Minis have always been famous for being fun-to-drive cars and this is visible here too. For a detailed comparison, however, we need to get our hands on the wheel. Stay tuned.
