Playwright Vijay Tendulkar is known for his ability to comment on India's social scenario with a touch of dark humour. Though he raised quite a few eyebrows with his bold plays, the power of his writing ensured that even after the passage of decades they still manage to rouse theu00a0audience.
Aman Gupta, SC Makhija and Preeta Mathur in Jaat Hi Poochho Sadhu Ki
This weekend, Tendulkar's play, Pahije Jateeche, will be staged by Dinesh Thakur's Ank Theatre Group. The play, Jaat Hi Poochho Sadhu Ki, deals with discrimination based on the caste system and critiques the education system of our country. The central protagonist is Mahipat, played by Aman Gupta, who despite being educated faces problems in finding a suitable job because of his caste.
Ank had performed this bitter comedy, 12 years ago, but is re-staging it with several new cast members. Preeta Mathur, Thakur's wife, plays the protagonist's love interest, Nalini. She says, "Dineshji had been wanting to do the play for the last 2-3 years but due to several problems we couldn't revive it.u00a0He feels that Tendulkar should always be available for the youth of every generation. Though times have changed, the play is still relevant. The caste system is still prevalent, even in the city."
