From Mexican themed house parties to intimately funny Valentine's Day gifts and offbeat stationery for all ages, commercial artist Disha Mehta will personalise your world in every conceivable shade and hue

Gone are the days when personalised gifting meant having to coax your artistically-inclined cousin to hand make a wedding invite or birthday party. Worse, one would have to cajole aunts settled overseas to ship expensive stationery so your kid's first birthday was the talk of social circles.

Personal touch
Enter the super-customiser. This jack-of-all-trades will personalise everything from your wedding stationery to intimate Valentine's Day paraphernalia, from baby shower gifts to calendars and coffee table books for your parents' silver jubilee. Twenty two year-old Disha Mehta is a product of the revolution that seems to have taken over the entrepreneurial landscape. This Final Year student from Sir JJ School of Applied Art made the most of her artistic leanings and set up Disha Mehta: Customizing Creativity, nearly 18 months ago. "In my Third Year (of college), I would make scrap books and stationery for friends, even while I worked for a commercial artist. A friend insisted I get paid for my work and soon I was doing it on a regular basis," shares this Prabhadevi resident.

Wide canvas
Disha's canvas is vast she'll personalise gifts, stationery for kids and grown-ups, give your calendars a quirky edge, create branding solutions, plan wedding themes and house parties, design return gift boxes, coffee table books, board games, Taboo, Uno and even playing cards. She doesn't stick to the tried-and-tested formulae. So when a customer approached her for suggestions for a novel Valentine's Day gift, Disha gave the popular Snakes and Ladders board game a funky twist "I had to work with loads of intimate information," she chuckles. "The ladders led you to the best moments in the relationship while the snakes' fangs highlighted the unhappy events. The accompanying coins were also customised." Another project that she's excited about is an engagement invite for two lawyers, "We've created a Treaty of Marriage, drafted in legal language, complete with terms including authorised signatories."

Design diaries
"Since I study in an arts environment, I'm surrounded by design elements. We have an excellent library that gives us great insights into colour theories and processes. Having said that, I don't look at any particular designer for inspiration. After I spot an idea, I intentionally avoid creating the same and instead, attempt something entirely different," admits Disha who plans to set up her website after she completes art school. Wedding-centric ideas will be her focus ufffd "it's very challenging from a creative angle; every customer wants to have an exclusive wedding." Until then, she'll continue to effortlessly straddle between studies, her projects with commercial artists and of course, Customising Creativity.
