The Mela or festival scene has always played an important part in Bollywood movies, be it the hero and the heroine romancing, or the local gunda creating havoc. The several melas that spring up in various parts of the city around this time of year give us the chance to act out our own hero-heroine fantasy, provided you have the patience to wade through sweaty crowds.

Given that Visarjan falls on a weekend, this year, it might not be the best idea to go for a night out, as streets are likely to be choked with traffic. Throwing your own party at home might be a saner option. I walked down the road that houses the famed Lalbaugcha Raja and did some party shopping of my own, where I found long, glittery trumpets (Rs 10), bird-shaped party blowouts that balloon to over five-feet high when whistled, hats, masks, plastic rods with neon lights (how does a neon dance floor in your home sound?), devil's horns (Rs 20), momo moulds (Rs 5), drums, dart boards, fake moustaches, and even cotton candy sellers whom you can hire for a day! So, what are you waiting for! Go on, and throw your own at-home mela.

At Parel (the stretch from Bharatmata junction to Lalbaug Ganesh Mandal).
