After a long hiatus, Delhi-based band Indigo Children returns tou00a0Mumbai as part of their summer tour with a new lineup
The first strains of young, nonplussed angst we heard from this half-a-decade old band, Indigo Children, was in 2005. At the finals of the first nation-wide Annual Rock Festival, Campus Rock Idols, this threesome with a funny sounding name (they were called Superfuzz Bigmuff after a Mudhoney's EP), had us stop our distracted stupor and take notice. The mop-haired frontman, Sanchal Malhar, delivered stellar-albeit-nasal screeches and stage antics that looked as if the band members would pass out from an attempt at trashing about the stage.
If the post-Punk Indie band Arctic Monkeys were looking for music-doubles, they could stop their search at Indigo Children. The band's other inspirations were Wolfmother, Oasis and White Stripes.
Eventually, after a successful run and numerous festival wins, including GIR, Channel V's Launchpad the band opened for the likes of Bryan Adams and Backstreet Boys. Then they disbanded with, "growing up catching up" to do, as founder member, guitarist Nikhil Rufus Raj explains. "We just had to get back to school and find a way to make a living, start our careers. Now we are back," says Nikhil, who bemuses their newfound success when they were mere college kids. "We were lucky, Sanchal and I, to be performing and playing while we guys were in school. At that age, we felt we had arrived," says Nikhil, who thinks Punk in India is still very niche. "It's a culture thing," he proclaims.
The much more older and wiser band (most members are 25) now has a new drummer in Sahil Mendiratta and guitarist in Jaidev and is on their summer tour, with performances in Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune. "There's a new set list, new material, new inspiration beyond Wolfmother. We should also be recording. I think it's time for an album," promises Nikhil. Like one of their songs, this should be quite a Downpour.
