Attend a performance featuring the Kodaly String Quartet from Budapest

The Kodaly Quartet was founded in 1966 by four students from the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest as a continuation of the great Hungarian string quartet tradition. In 1968, the ensemble titled the Sebestyén Quartet at that time (named after the new Quartet's first violinist), won the first prize at the International Leo Weiner String Quartet Competition in Budapest.u00a0

The Quartet aims at offering an authentic interpretation of the works of Zoltán Kodály, and gives importance to the traditions that Kodály conceived as essential in musical culture.

The Quartet has participated in several festivals around the world. They have recorded 60 CDs including the entire string quartet cycles by Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert.

In 1990, the Hungarian government awarded the Outstanding Artist Prize to the Kodály String Quartet, and in 1996 it received the Bartók-Pásztory Prize.

The musicians in the group include violonist Attila Falvay, who was admitted to the Ferenc Liszt Academy at the age of 16 and pursued his studies under the direction of Professor Snitkowsky.

Apart from Falvay, there is violonist Erika Toth, who has received an Artist Degree and Doctorate (DLA) from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. She joined the Kodály String Quartet in June 2005.

Fellow violonist Janos Fejervari has completed violin and viola studies at the Ferenc Liszt Academy in Budapest while celloist Gyorgy Eder studied in Professor Ede Banda's class at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music. He has toured extensively and has done recordings for Hungaroton, Teldec and Naxos labels.
