Forty-five dancers come together for the city's debut Latin dance theatre performance, in which they portray the human story: the battleground for the struggle between the Seven Deadly Sins and Seven Virtues

The Latin dance theatre performance by the Baile-de-Salon Ballroom Academy sees the Seven Deadly Sins and Seven Virtues personified. The Sins are depicted working towards the corruption of the world through the destruction of the Virtues.

The forty-five dancers who have come together for the performance come from diverse backgrounds, with most performing the Latin dance form for the first time. "The performance is by people interested in dance, and who have been wanting to perform on stage," says founder Ajaz Shaikh, who has also conceptualised the show.

"Latin dance performances typically last between two and two-and-a-half-minutes," he says, adding, "We wanted to fuse Latin dance with a musical or a theatre act, and so we now have a 90-minute performance with different sets of stories linked to each other that meet at a climax," adds Ajaz, who left behind a lucrative career in investment banking three years ago to pursue his passion for dance.

With each Sin (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride) followed by a Virtue (Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, and Humility) portrayed through a particular dance form, the act culminates with a face-off between the Sins and Virtues.

For example, Bachata is used to portray Lust, Brazilian Tribal for Gluttony, Latin Jazz for chastity and Casino Rueda for Kindness. The stories associated with each Sin or Virtue are different and range from an Adam-and-Eve story used to depict Gluttony to a pregnant woman to portray Patience. "The final battle shows the culmination of Virtues and Sins, which make up a human being. While in no means conclusive, it is what human beings are made up of," Ajaz signs off.
