After a few initial hiccups, Out! Stories From The New Queer India, a collection of short stories compiled by author and activist Minal Hazratwala is finally releasing today.
The book, a compilation of short stories and memoirs from young writers all over the country not just looks into the world of queer in India and tells their struggles and the difficulties they face in everyday life, but also explores how the families of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgenders (LGBT) come to terms with their children's life choices.
There are plenty of poignant stories inside: Two parents find themselves as supporters of LGBT rights after they were introduced to them, two girls row a boat one night and find their hearts opening to each other, a young man is in love and the country's highest court is going to decide whether he is worthy of the love or not. The book includes 30 such stories from young Indian writers, each telling a different stories of queer India.
The stories were selected from around 100 stories that the team received. After several readings, discussions and hours of brainstorming, Hazratwala and the editorial team zeroed in on 30 stories. Actress Nandita Das will launch the book today.
