In what could be deemed as to another setback to the South Korean tech giant, Samsung has temporarily stopped the production of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone. According to Reuters, this was done in co-operation with authorities in China and the United States, as two US carriers have stopped exchanging or selling new Note 7 phones.

On September 2, Samsung announced a a global recall of 2.5 million Note 7s in 10 markets including the United States due to faulty batteries causing some of them to catch fire. Even an American flight was evacuated earlier this week after a replacement model Note 7 smartphone began smoking inside the plane.

Samsung earlier stated it was investigating reports of "heat damage issues" and would share the findings. Meanwhile, carrier AT&T Inc said they will stop exchanging new Note 7 smartphones and T-Mobile US Inc said it was temporarily halting sales of new Note 7s as well as exchanges during this time period.

Samsung had claimed earlier that more than 1 million people across the world are using Galaxy Note 7 smartphones with safe batteries.

Samsung Electronics saw its operating profit rise in the third quarter despite a global recall of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones.
