Masquerading as an ice-cream parlour, Ice 'n' spice in Dombivli also offers value-for-money comfort food including sandwiches, pizzas, burgers and shakes
On weekends, Dombivli's junta religiously makes a beeline for the nearest restaurant, which explains the massive queues in front of most eateries. On one such rainy evening, when we were in search of an eatery without a waiting list, we chanced upon a deserted Ice 'N' Spice.
Masala Cheese Toast sandwich
For all purposes, it resembled an ice-cream parlour, courtesy the larger signboard of an ice-cream brand outside, followed by a smaller board announcing Ice 'N' Spice. But once we stepped inside and glimpsed the large menu board on the wall, we realised it had more to offer.
Don't go expecting any frills and you won't be disappointed. The seating arrangement is basic, with a few tables and chairs in the space. On the evening we dropped by, we had the place to ourselves, which was a welcome respite.
To veer towards safe terrain, we opted for a Masala Cheese Toast (Rs 30) Aalu Cheese Toast (Rs 25) and Chilli Cheese Toast (Rs 25). The delicious Masala Cheese Toast arrived first and was polished off in no time. Ice 'N' Spice create their own chutneys, which they add to their sandwiches and pizzas. The chutney for this sandwich included ginger, coriander and chilli sauce among other ingredients, giving it a refreshingly distinct taste from the usual sandwiches. The Chilli Cheese Toast and the Aalu Cheese Toast were equally good and made for perfect comfort food on a rainy day.
Emboldened by our choices till then, we ordered a Tomato Cheese Pizza (Rs 40). It had the right amount of cheese and had been sprinkled with their special chutney concocted from ginger, garlic and chilli sauce. The combination actually worked wonders and complemented the myriad flavours.
To finish off our meal, we opted for a Chocolate Milkshake (Rs 40) and a Cassata ice-cream (Rs 30), both of which, were passable.
The service is polite, but unobtrusive and they leave you in peace till you decide to approach them.
All in all, the menu may not be too extensive, but the reasonable pricing and the innovative preparations will surely lure in the college crowds. As for us, we are sure to return soon for some more of their sinful chutney-flavoured creations.u00a0
