Colorz of spice, a fine-dine on East Street has managed to get almost everything right -- Reasonable rates, affable staff and food as per Indian tastes
We have been passing by the corner of East Street for many years without finding anything interesting there. So, the glass chandeliers hanging on the first floor of the newly-opened restaurant Colorz of Spice was sure to catch our attention.
As we entered the restaurant, we realised that the mid-sized place was more like the fine-dining restaurant of your neighbourhood. The restaurant with their six-seaters seemed to be the ideal choice for families for their weekend outing. Apart from Indian and Chinese, they serve a couple of dishes of Italian, Mexican and Thai as well.
As our food journey was about to begin, an attendant walked up to us with a smile and spoke in a pleasant manner, answering our queries and making a few recommendations. In Pune, this has to be taken as a huge plus point considering it does not happen too often.
After glimpsing through the menu, we decided to start with a Chicken Manchow Soup (Rs 75). It was tasty and perfectly palatable to Indian-Chinese taste -- hot, sour, full of vegetables, chicken, egg and crunchy noodles. The Mushroom Manchurian Dry (Rs 130), that we ordered next had battered chunky mushroom bites in classic Indian Manchurian gravy. We were happy with this dish as well.
Just when we were ordering the main course, the electricity did a disappearing act. Candles promptly arrived on the tables and the staff apologised to us for the inconvenience. Pleased with the hospitality and pleasant nature of the staff, we decided to settle in comfortably and enjoy a candle-light dinner.u00a0
The Chicken Chettinad (Rs 210) arrived with crisp, buttered Makkai Roti (Rs 15). The chicken was succulent and cooked in thick gravy, redolent of aromas from Tamil Nadu.u00a0 The Vegetarian Triple Schezwan Rice (Rs 140), that arrived after we were almost stuffed with the delicious chicken, reminded us of our college canteen days. The huge platter had crisp
noodles and fried rice loaded with vegetables and red gravy. Very desi but, once again, quite nice.u00a0
The electricity had not yet arrived, but honestly, we didn't care. We were happy and satisfied with the food. With its affable staff, food suited to desi tastes and reasonable prices, our hunch is that the place may soon become a local favourite.
