The rapid development of cities has made the world a smaller place but robbed us of the pleasure of enjoying the simplicity of life. Contemporary dancer Deepak Kurki aims to highlight this pathos through his piece NH7 as part of the Park's New Festival 2013 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) this week.
Contemporary dance combines various genres, including modern dance, jazz and classical ballet. "We emphasise on originality and innovation in this form of dance. So when most of the cities across our country are undergoing rapid urbanisation, I thought of showing this development through dance moves and hence decided to stage this performance with my troupe," says Kurki.
He, along with his two co-dancers, will reflect the changing landscapes of the city through their body movements such as waves and jumps etc. Interestingly, they will not be using any props or elaborate sets but will rely solely on their movements during the 45-minute long performance. The artistes will perform on the beats of live and pre-recorded techno-music. "The performance has various layers with a central theme that will show a village-boy coming to the city due to financial problems and howhe is caught in the mayhem of the rapid development," he adds.
Kurki, who is trained in attakkalari dance form and holds a post-graduate diploma in dance from Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance in Austria, has been performing since 2000. "My troupe is very excited about the performance. Our focus will be to connect our mind and body through our fluid dance movements, and reinvent ourselves to give a visual treat to the audiences," he signs off.
