"Tarkovsky for me is the greatest director, the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream" - film director and cine legend Ingmar Bergman had once said of the Russian director Andrei Tarkovksy.

Tarkovsky was not only a filmmaker but also a writer, film editor, theatre and opera director. Considered one of the greatest filmmakers of his time, his films were lauded by all. Enlighten Film Society will screen three of his films this weekend - Stalker, The Mirror andu00a0u00a0The Sacrifice.

The Sacrifice is a film from 1986 about Alexander, a writer and former actor, who is worried about the lack of spirituality that exists in modern mankind. World War III breaks out and he vows to God to sacrifice all that he loves to stop the war. The Mirror focuses on a dying man, who reminisces about his childhood during World War II, and his adolescence.

The film mixes flashbacks, historical footage and original poetry to interweave reflections about Russian history and society. Stalker is one of Tarkovsky's most famous works; this sci-fi flick is about a guide who leads a writer and a scientist through a dangerous and alien place called the Zone to find a room that grants wishes.

"Tarkovsky was one of the most original filmmakers in cinema history whose beautiful other-worldly images ignite the imagination and have pushed the cinematic form forward in a way no other filmmaker has done. The films are also incredibly rich in symbolism and philosophical thoughts," said Pranav Ashar, founder, Enlighten Film Society.
