'Lets meet at the English Pub' is their tagline. But what is your excuse of visiting an 'English' pubIf you were nursing a drink in an 'English pub'' in a mall in south Delhi what would you celebrate? Your action-packed transformation from the motor part businesswala of Chandni Chowk to the John Galliano (never mind if he works for the French) clad refined big shot your dad would have been proud of. Or will you play the sneering son who loves his Windsor Premier but after two pegs down loves to imitate dad (who still loves to criticize all things related to Company Bahadur). Or is there yet another approach?
Sit down for dinner in Geoffery's in Select Citywalk mall in Saket and watch the drama unfold in itself. Yes, 'the chestnut wood interiors, the little curios from all over Europe and the bar' will indeed give you a feel of being in an old English pub.u00a0 But the sous-chef is from Bihar, the manager from Manipur, the rest of the others yes, you got it, from everywhere. The same goes for the food, 'British classics, Italian compulsions, Arabian engagements, Indian indulgences and Oriental exotics' .It's an amalgamation of aromas, textures and flavours from everywhere.u00a0
Yesterday, I tasted their Spaghetti Bolognese. Don't expect a bed of spaghetti with the meat sauce sitting on top. They'll mix it up before they serve you but what the heck! you'll still love to wash them down without being too fussy.u00a0 I tried their Bruschetta too. A vegetarian version but delectable, would love to bring my vegetarian friends to taste the one they serve here. The Vermicelli prawn wasn't something out of this planet, look out and you'll find places where they make them better.
However, the one which takes all the brownie points is the Sizzling Brownie here. You are wiping your lips after the main course and lo and behold an angel enters with a sizzling plate on brownie with ice cream on top. And before you can blink she pours a cup of chocolate cream on it. Well, it could kill you but then you'll die with spoonfuls of bliss in your mouth.
Geoffrey's is about middle-class role playing. Playing the laat sahab or the one who disapproves or something different depending upon your fantasy. But it is also about a mini India which works together in Delhi and goes global, never mind if only with a little whimsical English touch.
