This weekend, St Xavier's College will play host to six young Classical musicians as part of the Young Artists Festival. The festival, which started way back in the 1980s, giveS young and new faces of Classical music a platform to showcase their talent.
Past performers at the festival include the likes of Rakesh Chaurasia and Shankar Mahadevan, among others. Spread over two days, starting from November 29, the festival is organised by the Indian Music Group, a student-run music group, which also organises the annual classical music fest, Janfest.
The festival will see performances by disciples of well-known names like violinist Dr V Balaji, tabla player Ustad Fazal Qureshi, Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan of Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, among others.
Day 1 will see performances by violinist Manas Kumar, a student of Dr Balaji of Varanasi, Kaustuv Ganguli from the Patiala Gharana on vocals and Abhishek Kathe on harmonium. Kathe has been learning under the guidance of harmonium player Seema Shirodkar.
Day 2 will witness two vocalists -- u00a0Dhanashree Ghaisas, a disciple of Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande and Ghulam Hasan Khan, grandson of Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan. Joining them on the last day will be tabla player Shirpal Raul, who has accompanied tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Husain and is currently training under Ustad Fazal Qureshi.
