Every month 100 million users log on to Twitter to share their opinions with their followers and to find out what's happening in the Twittersphere.

50 million of those users visit Twitter every day to keep their finger on the microblogging pulse.

While millions of people are active users on the social network, a large percentage don't contribute to the online discussions when they log on to Twitter.

"For many, getting the most out of Twitter isn't only about tweeting: 40 percent of our active users simply sign in to listen to what's happening in their world," said Twitter in a September 8 blog post.

Technology blog The Next Web sat in on an informal business meeting led by Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and were privy to an additional array of "interesting statistics."

"Of the 40% of inactive Twitter users on Twitter, Costolo says that Twitter is attempting to move many of them as possible into simple publishing actions, getting them to begin actively participating in Twitter, rather than just consuming," reported The Next Web.u00a0

If Twitter is able to entice its read-only users to start tweeting the company will begin to see a huge increase in its tweet per day figure, which according to The Next Web is currently at around 5 billion tweets every five days.

So who is using Twitter these days? According to Twitter's recent blog post, 99 percent of America's top 200 non-profits, 87% of Billboard's Top 100 musicians of 2010, every team in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS and 35 global heads of state are all using the social network to share short, 140-character-long messages with the world.
