Caitanya Creations' line of silver and vermeil gold jewellery combines architectural forms with geometry and literature
"The skeletal base plan of architecture is very masculine. Through my collection I have tried to transform this masculinity into a feminine, delicate work of art," explains Jushmi Barooah describing the basic idea behind her jewellery line, Caitanya Creations (pronounced as Chaitanya). Based in Assam, Caitanya Creations was founded in January 2010 by Barooah who graduated from the Chelsea College of Art and Design after studying Fashion design from theu00a0 National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). This year-old collection has already been a part of the Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair and will be a part of the Japan Jewellery Fair this year.

"I am a Product and Graphic Designer as a result of which 3-D and geometrical patterns interest me. Often, I use the pentagon symbol in my designs. Apart from this, I imbibe poetry that has inspired me or anything else from my immediate environment in my designs," she elaborates. All her designs are done in 18-karat vermeil gold, sterling silver, semi-precious stones and colourful stones such as amethyst and quartz.
But her collection is not only about style. Like the name (which means consciousness in Sanskrit), Barooah also aims to raise awareness about various social issues, especially the welfare of children. Hence, 2% of the sales proceeds from most items go to the Bal Ashram run under the NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan.
Her next collection will focus on nature, especially the type of flora and fauna described in John Keats' poetry and in books such as Alice in Wonderland. Barooah intends to use recycled silver for this collection.
