Doonya has been taking the US by storm for a couple of years. Its ripples can are being felt across Mumbai these days. Like many before, the new workout in town is Bollywood-inspired but has an advantage of being a proper fitness regime. Trained by American Doonya instructors, Mumbai-based Nyela Kapadia is now finding takers of this multifaceted workout at the Tangerine Arts Studio.

Doonya was started by Priya and Kajal (in yellow) in 2005 and is a hit routine with Hollywood and Bollywood stars

"The workout is choreographed to a Bollywood song but unlike other Bollywood workouts, it targets certain muscle groups, throughout the set. In Doonya, fitness impact is very important," explains the 32-year-old trainer. There are four components - Bolly-pop, Pop Bhangra, Desi Folk Styles, and Classical Conditioning. "Bolly-pop is more on the lines of Hip-Hop while Classical Conditioning is for cooling off. The latter uses Kathak, Bharatanatyam and others," informs Kapadia.

For those who are looking out to knock calories off and tone muscles at the same time, Doonya is the perfect one-hour workout. Sessions start with a warm-up after which steps are taught imbibing a sense of retaining form and posture while having awareness of the muscles one is working out. Speaking of the initial response, Kapadia comments, "It has been very encouraging and she has been receiving several queries. There is no age restrictions, and people tend to really enjoy the workout."

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has also claimed that she swears by Doonya's dance routines. Songs such as Dance Like A Chammiya from Happy New Year and Kamli from Dhoom 3 are also highly popular.
