Actress Shabana Azmi, 59, was hospitalised with an excruciating ear ache. The pain was allegedly the result of the 30-odd kilos she piled on to play a well-fed Punjabi woman in Gurinder Chadha's It's A Wonderful Afterlife.
The actress's cholesterol and triglyceride levels shot up considerably. Experts are not surprised. They are constantly advising dieters against opting for yo-yo (hypo-caloric dieting) diets.

According to nutritionist Anjali Peswani, it can lead to muscle loss, cause fluctuations in blood pressure and sometimes, even result in a nervous breakdown.
"In Azmi's case, her blood pressure levels are said to have shot up, and that could be because she may already have been prone to high-blood pressure," says Peswani.
Azmi, Peswani feels, could have avoided the trip to the hospital, had she been more careful and gained weight gradually.

"After a certain age, weight gain and loss cannot be meteoric.
It is an established fact that older women have a slower metabolic rate. In fact, post 30, regardless of gender, metabolism slows down, making it tougher to lose weight."
You need to keep your body type and composition, age, lifestyle and health concerns in mind. "Someone with no health issues can look at losing anywhere between half a kilo to one kilo a week."

A healthy diet should comprise 50 to 55 per cent (complex) carbohydrates, 25 to 30 per cent protein. The remaining energy should be sourced from fat.

What's strange is that doctors claim it was a result of the excessive weight she had to put on for Gurinder Chadha's film, It's A Wonderful
Afterlife.
Ever since Azmi put on 35 extra kilos to look like a well-fed Punjabi housewife, she has been struck by health problems.

In fact, she was not allowed to use her cell phone for a while. Husband Javed Akhtar says, "The doctors said the pain was caused by a membrane imbalance triggered by drastic weight gain and loss."
Singer-composer Adnan Sami who had also shed pots of weight, says the body goes through pressure once it starts losing excess flab.
"It's called body shock. The appetite remains consistent because when you become fat, your stomach cavity expands, and continues to remain that size even while you are shedding weight.

So, the challenge is to fill it with non-fattening food."
Adnan consulted nutritionists who advised him to go on a high-protein diet. "I could eat as much grilled chicken as I wanted.
I was forbidden oily food, rice and bread. It's important to figure the right balance of foods while trying to lose weight."
