Greece, a tourist hotspot, is facing a tough wildfire season after its warmest winter and earliest heatwave on record, with temperatures hitting 44°C (111°F) in June. Forest fires that raged in the outer suburbs of Athens over the weekend have been brought under control. Fanned by strong winds of up to 70 kilometres per hour and dry conditions, two fires had broken out on Sunday in the seaside resort of Keratea, east of the capital, and the suburb Stamata. Smoke rises during a wildfire in Keratea, near Athens, Greece

A new forest fire broke out in the Keratea region, some twenty kilometers south of the Greek capital on June 30, 2024. On the previous day, a major fire in the same area was brought under control, 

Houses were destroyed in the wildfire.

Trees also fell down as smoke rose after the wildfire.

Firefighters worked over the weekend to get the fires under control.

Helicopters also sprayed water to curb the forest fire, which has since been brought under control.
