The island fortress at Murud-Janjira was built by Siddi Johar. It became the 16th century capital of Janjira's Siddis (descendants of Ethiopian traders). Even Shivaji could not conquer the 12 m high walls. Its 22 watch towers, battlements and cannons are worth exploring.
How to reach there:Take a ferry from the Gateway of India to Mandwa, and a bus from there on to Murud. Roha is the nearest railhead. Or else, make a weekend plan to visit the fort, and stay at the beach facing Golden Swan Beach Resort.



Sindhudurg
Spread over 48 acres, this fort was built by Shivaji in 1664 AD. Located off the Malwan coast, the fort's zigzag outer wall has various viewing points that helped the Marathas spot invaders.u00a0 Inside, there are three freshwater wells named Dudh (milk), Shakhar (sugar) and Dahi (curds), and a temple dedicated to Shivaji.
How to reach there: Hop on to a boat from Malwan port. The town is about 510 km from Mumbai, on the Goa Highway. Ferries ply regularly between Malwan port and the fort.

Vijaydurg
Originally called Gheriya, Vijaydurg was built during the Shilara Dynasty. In 1664, Shivaji won it over from Adilshah of Bijapur and named it Vijaydurg. With time, the eastern trench was reclaimed and connected to the mainland. Today, it covers 17 acres, with three 36 metre-high fortifications and 27 bastions.
How to reach there: Vijaydurg is 245 km away from Mumbai, en route to Goa. Rajapur is the closest railhead on the Konkan sector. You can also trek from Donaje to the top of the fort.
