A regatta near Lonavala guarantees an adrenaline-packed monsoon weekend
Pavana, a freshwater lake nestled in the rolling hills near Lonavala, offers a sense of calm to Mumbaikars. But every monsoon since 2014, it has been bustling with activity, thanks to the Wet and Wild Regatta it plays host to. It's fourth edition is being held this weekend.
A sailboat competition at Pavana lake
It involves a host of activities like surfing, kayaking, cycling, mountain climbing and the key component - sailing. The event was started by a bunch of sailors from the city, who were frustrated with the choppy monsoon waters of the Arabian Sea restricting them from pursuing their passion. "Then, some people discovered Pavana lake. It's safe during the rainy season and has a helpful wind. So, we decided to call sailors from all over the country and conduct a race," says Dhanya Pilo, one of the organisers.
Sailors from Goa, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Chennai and Visakhapatnam will participate in this edition. However, Pilo adds that there's something for everyone since the idea is to bring people close to nature, regardless of whether they know the difference between the port and starboard sides of a boat.
