Singer and composer Kailash Kher, who’s making his debut as a solo music composer with the forthcoming movie Desi Kattey, says his fans expect nothing but magic from him

A couple of days ago, Kailash Kher packed his bags and set off for a two-week tour to America with his band. "It's my wife's birthday soon and I won't be there. So I've already booked a birthday gift for her," he laughs, when we speak to him over the phone a day before departure. But the singer and composer has a gift ready for his fans as well. Kher has earlier composed music for movies such as Dasvadaniya and Chandni Chowk to China along with his Kailasa bandmates, Naresh and Paresh Kamath. But this year, the man with a rustic voice also debuts as a music composer.

Kailesh Kher's new album will be out next year

Kher has written and composed six songs for the soon-to-be-released film, Desi Kattey. He has also roped in an impressive line-up of singers for the same. Apart from an item song sung by Rekha Bhardwaj and Hard Kaur, there is a song on friendship sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Kher himself. "Music has always united people of India and Pakistan, and I wanted to bring out that aspect of music by getting Rahatji to sing with me," he tells us.

A solo motivational song, Daagh De by Kher, is rather close to his heart. "The rhythm patterns were created by Sivamani, who reached the studio with two trucks full of instruments while we were recording the song," recalls the singer with a laugh. Apart from this, the film has two romantic tracks - Albeliya by Shreya Ghoshal and Bas Tum by Akriti Kakkar and Sreekant Krishnamurthy.

He admits that people's expectations exert much pressure on him. "But I have a responsibility to deliver. Of course, the freedom that we get when we're composing music for albums is different. In movies, we have to justify the demands of the script," he elaborates. The composer is already working on his next album. "We'll release it by early next year," he adds. Guess when it comes to Kher, there's always something to look forward to.
