The newly-opened Sichuan House in a Kurla mall scores on most counts if you’re looking for Sichuan-styled fare

If you have been to Phoenix Marketcity in Kurla earlier, you will know that space isn't an issue. The mall is big enough for someone to lose their way. When we visited its new Chinese restaurant, Sichuan House, we were happy to see the spacious seating and not have the next table right over our shoulder.

We could not taste the beer in the Drunken Chicken, but we liked the taste

Most of the dishes, we were told, were inspired by the Sichuan region of China. The high ceilings, bamboo-clad walls, white washed brickwork and minimalist Chinese elements, including an artistically cut out branch and a serene looking Buddha, give the place a quiet sense of space and calm. The menu has ample choice for vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

Chili Prawn Sichuan Style

We ordered Steamed Dumplings with Pokchoy and Black Mushroom (Rs 295), which were very flavourful. We recommend the Red Chilli Prawn Sichuan Style (Rs 475) for its finely balanced, moderately spicy gravy and the crunchy prawns. This one is not too hot, though you will spot a spicy icon next to its name in the menu.

The Drunken Chicken (Rs 350) comes in a brown gravy and claims to have beer in it. We seemed to miss that alcohol influence, but liked the taste nevertheless. The Golden Egg Fried Rice (Rs 325) had corn in it. Order it only if you really like American corn, otherwise you can skip this one.

The Litchi and Date Wonton, served with vanilla icecream (Rs 225) was perfect. It wasn't too sweet and had a thin, crunchy coating which allowed one to taste the sweet date filling. Sichuan House is not spectacular but worth a visit for your Chinese food cravings. Tip: The mall has ample parking, so don't let that worry you.
