Popular hangouts near Mumbai’s landmarks

P Ramalingam

As you walk down the road that leads from the exit of Matunga (Central) railway station, you're bound to catch a whiff of the aromas emanating from filter coffee. Follow your nose to reach a string of shops that make you feel as if you're in a small town somewhere in South India.

Right here is where you spot the board of P Ramalingam. The store was established in 1956 and is known for their special butter and ghee that is sourced from their dairy in Coimbatore.

The butter and ghee available here is not available anywhere else, and draws people from all over Mumbai to buy it.

"Try our ghee; you will see how sweet it is and then not be open to buy any other ghee," suggests one of the store attendants proudly. In the past few years, however, the store has seen a drop in the sales of the ghee and butter owing to people becoming increasingly health conscious.

Matunga has changed a lot since 1956, and so has the store. The store now houses all kinds of farsan, idli, dosa, upma mixes, spices, papad, pickles, condiments and filter coffee powder that mainly caters to a dominant South Indian resident population.
