âOur Motto, No Ajji-no-motto'. We couldn't help but giggle when we read Spring Onion's motto that was printed on their menu. A closer look at it revealed a list of dishes that you would find at your neighbourhood Chinese restaurant - a haven for quick-fix comfort food.
Chicken and Prawns Wrap Dry
Owned by ex-Ranji cricketer (Anand Yalvigi), we've often spotted crowds throng this King's Circle eatery, which has plans to expand by renting the space next door as well. A surprise addition to the eatery are the Irani cafe-style wooden chairs, which we guess is an inspiration from Koolar and Co next door. For our trial, we ordered Chicken and Prawns Wrap Dry (Rs 300, prices exclusive of taxes), a special for the day, and Kung Potato from the vegetarian starter section (Rs 180). Both made for a great start to our meal. The prawns were wrapped in chicken and cooked in a schezuan-style red sauce (though one portion was cooked with the shell still on it) and the potato dish had crispy pieces of potato, stir-fried in red sauce again with a slightly sweet aftertaste.
Singapore Rice and Fish in Mustard Chilli Sauce. Pics/Rane Ashish
For our mains, we picked Fish cooked in Mustard Chilli Sauce (Rs 220) and Singapore Rice (chicken, Rs 200) to compliment it. For a vegetarian option, we ordered the Coriander Pot Noodles (Rs 280). The Mustard Chilli Sauce was a hit with the mustard-lovers in the team and went well with the mildly-flavoured Singapore Rice.
The buttery noodles were packed separately from the base gravy, which sadly, was too watery. But since it was bursting with fresh flavours of coriander, we tucked into it, a la noodle soup. Spring Onion is the place to go to when you aren't in the mood to dissect the menu, but eat Indian-palate-friendly Asian food on a limited budget.
