Head to Step Iin Bar and Kitchen for a tasty and reasonably priced vegetarian and non-vegetarian options

The problem with most new eateries in the city is that they try to fit in as many cuisines as possible to please different customers, but end up getting most of it wrong. New eatery, Step Iin Bar and Kitchen, (ignore the misspelt ‘In') however, stays away from this formula and successfully ends up in pleasing our palates.

Located in a quiet lane in Mahim, next to Kazi Masjid, Step Iin offers a simple-yet-comfortable ambiance, similar to that of the neighbourhood restaurant you might be visiting since your childhood for Tandoori Roti with Paneer Makhanwala. But the menu is a tad better as they offer some weekend specials such as Nalli Nihari and Laal Maas, for which you would usually have to head to Mohammed Ali Road. Currently, the menu mainly consists of Indian and Mughlai cuisine; they plan to add Chinese soon.

After a particularly cumbersome travel to the eatery on a flooded evening, our first order, Palak Shorba (R120) worked wonders in lifting up our spirits. The consistency of the soup was quite creamy to compliment the flavour of spinach but also light enough to leave room for the next order. The appetisers offered the usual Paneer Tikka and Murgh Lasooni-type options. We ordered the interesting sounding Aloo Ke Guthke (R220) and Chicken Lemon Garlic Tikka (R260).

The vegetarian starter comprised of tiny cups of potato stuffed with cheese and paneer, and cooked in a spicy sauce. One bite and we were in delicious carb heaven. A crispier outer layer in the potatoes could have added a good texture to the dish though. The chicken starter was equally appetising with extremely tender chicken chunks laced with a delicate flavour of garlic and lemon. Thumbs up!

For the main course we ordered Murgh Do Pyaza (R260) with Tandoori Roti (R20) and Pudina Kulcha (R40). Cooked in a rich onion gravy, the curry dish is a great choice for those who love a rich gravy option with a buttery roti. The kulcha could have done with more mint; we would advise to go for a Tandoori Roti instead.

After a good meal we were eying the Rabdi and Gulab Jamun in the dessert section, sadly it wasn't available yet.

With its good variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, Step Iin makes for a simple and tasty culinary visit for Mahim and Dadar residents.
