With Lucknow's legendary buff kebabs under threat, we tried to find our fix in Mumbai

Unless you've been living under the rock or without an Internet connection, you would have heard that the famous tunday kebabs, made using buffalo meat, were taken off the menu at the legendary Tunday Kababi in Lucknow last week, post Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses. Having tried the heavenly, melt-in-your-mouth kebabs on a visit to the century-old establishment last year, we craved a bite of tunday kebabs and scoured Mumbai to find that the dish finds few takers here.

Lucknowee on Mohammad Ali Road, one of the few places offering the authentic version, shuttered recently. Instead, we headed to its Jogeshwari branch, Lucknowee Tunday Kebab, launched in December 2015, which offers the succulent dish (Rs 120 for four pieces) along with an extensive menu featuring Mughlai and Oriental varieties too. "We make it with goat meat, but use the original Lucknowi recipe," assured the staffer.

The kebabs came close to their Lucknowee ilk, with their silky soft, fall-off-the-fork texture and richly spiced flavours. However, we missed the robust buff meat flavour, which makes Tunday what it is. Until the original kababchi finds a way to bring it back on the menu, we'll stick to galouti and kakori kebabs.
