The US observes National Junk Food Day every year on 21 July. The definition of junk food might vary but it is broadly believed to be food which is high in calories and low in nutrition. While the US has been instrumental in spreading the popularity of junk food, every culture has comfort foods that are taste-oriented instead of being nutrient dense. With growing awareness, people have been inclining towards healthier alternatives. For some, this could mean opting for baked meals instead of deep fried and for others it could be reducing their gluten intake. We have rounded up a list of eateries across Mumbai serving healthy variants of our most indulgent snacks.
Sante Spa Cuisine
The Mumbai monsoon often brings along deep cravings of fried goodness. For those who crave the crunch of samosa but stay clear of fried goods, Sante Spa Cuisine serves a healthy reimagining of this classic - the Baked Raw Banana Samosa (INR 280). The crispy samosas are stuffed with spiced raw banana mixture and served with flavourful chutneys. The Green Pao Bhaji (INR 440) served with homemade multigrain focaccia pao seems equally interesting.

Cauliflower has been a popular ingredient among those who are diet-conscious as a replacement for traditional gluten containing flours. Taking inspiration, The Pantry serves a Flower Power Pizza (INR 445), a cauliflower base pizza topped with reduced fat cheese. This healthy pizza is sure to appeal to anyone who follows a gluten-free diet.

G.O.D Cafe
A first of its kind A2 milk cafe, G.O.D. serves ayurvedic and sattvic meals. The menu is designed by a certified ayurvedic philosopher and specialist and aims to serve guilt-free dishes. The Healthy Vada Pav (INR 20), made with rock salt and fried in cold pressed oil, is a recreation of the Mumbai local special. Special attention is paid to the cooking process as the takeaway dish is made fresh in small batches in cold pressed oil that is discarded each time, in alignment with the ayurvedic principles. Another popular dish gets a healthy makeover as A2 ghee and fresh sprouted makti is used to make Healthy A2 Ghee Misal Pav (INR 155).
