Searching for Christmas Tree

The camera zooms in on a moving car. The father and the mother are engaged in a conversation, the uninteresting and banal type. The son in the backseat gazes beyond into the white scenery. There's snow everywhere. With his two fingers, he imagines a skier skiing through the neighbourhood to while away time. And suddenly, his daydream takes shape in the form of a freeskier in a chrome yellow jacket, who shreds through the streets of Nelson, all the while staying on the same path as the car.

Safety Third

The film ends with the car reaching its destination, a boarding school, and as the camera pans out, we spot a number of freeskiers doing what they do best, each a reality of a student's daydream. This is The North Face's short film, Imagination, featuring pro freeskier Tom Wallisch, and is one of the many that will be screened as part of the BANFF Mountain Film Festival, to mark the first year anniversary of Trip 360Ëu00c2u009a, a travel company.

Surf the line

The BANFF Mountain Film Festival is the largest festival on mountain and adventure films, and is an annual autumn event in Banff, Canada. After its very successful show in Bengaluru last year, Trip 360Ëu00c2u009a and The Himalayan Club have collaborated to bring it to the city of dreams. Like Imagination, films from around the globe that revolve around the subject of mountains, travel, action and adventures will be screened at the four-hour long festival.

Ascend

The 13 shorts include Surf the Line from France, Searching for Christmas Tree from China, Where the Wild Things Play and Ascend from the United States, and more. "Every year a competition of such shorts is organised at Banff from which they pick the best for the film festival, and the best of the best are the ones selected for a world tour," says Nandini Purandare, secretary and editor of the Himalayan Journal. "We are bunch of mountain lovers, especially of the Himalayas. The films to be screened are the best that have been made around the theme, and provide various perspectives to one's love for the mountains," she summarises.
