In the name of Bombay: Cool new ideas to celebrate your city

As a conservation architect, an average day in the life of Andheri-based Kruti Garg revolves around buildings, heritage and history. Unlike any other curious passerby looking at the many unique heritage buildings in the city, Garg knows their story inside out. "My work makes me see these buildings in a different light because I actually work within them. I know how these buildings function, how they grow old, need to be taken care of and are struggling - just like a living being." This love affair with the city's architectural styles and buildings has led her to curate a range of inspired walks. And now, the architect is sharing her love for Mumbai's cityscape through beautiful, detailed souvenirs.

From coasters, diaries, totes and thermos bottles to wall frames and mouse pads, Garg's virtual shop Bombay Gothic offers one the chance to carry a bit of Mumbai wherever they are. The initiative took off in the 2020 lockdown. Her products are also a part of the Kala Ghoda Art Kart. "The idea is to engage with the public on what I know about the city's architecture, spread awareness about its dynamic heritage, and remind them to take care of it," she tells us.

There are currently three series of products that Garg has created. Urbs Prima in India depicts the BMC headquarters along with Victoria Terminus and The Times of India building, which signified Bombay as the first city of India. The Kala Ghoda Kaleidoscape series pays homage to the art and culture district, and the Victorian Gothic ensemble reflects the world heritage ensemble of the Gothic stretch along the Esplanade. "Bombay Gothic is unique; it became the identity of the city," she shares, adding, "For me, Mumbai has always been a modern city, as reflected in its architecture. I wanted to pay a tribute to its eclecticism, vibrancy, and bohemianism."
