North Axis Project’s new single infuses a Turkish experience in its rhythms

Siddharth Bhayani

In a world of lyric-heavy compositions, a purely rhythm-based electronic music track can be a nice change of pace. Especially when it is accompanied by the lofty ideals of translating architectural concepts into sounds, as the North Axis Project promises. Its latest song Minar, released in late September, manages to convey the idea through a rhythmic percussive pattern and instrumentation.

The brainchild of music producer Siddharth Bhayani, the project's new single, Minar, is the result of an inspirational journey to Turkey and the Hagia Sophia mosque. It's difficult to pinpoint architectural details without imaginative leaps by the listener, but the experience of a spatial expanse comes through.

The percussive rhythm recreates the feel of running through open spaces. Bhayani adds touches of arabesque instruments such as oud and darbuka to evoke movement. While there is a sense of a project still under work, the style, concept and instrumentation of the track work in its favour.
