The man allegedly forced his wife to consume poison after his family started demanding dowry

Officials of the Faraskhana police station booked a 23-year-old man for allegedly consuming poison and forcing his wife to do the same after his family started harassing her for dowry.

Officials said the incident occurred in Shaniwarwada on April 12, following which the woman was admitted to a local hospital. Soon after she was discharged, the woman lodged a complaint against her husband.

They said complainant Shradha Nanekar, a resident of Kasaba Peth, was employed at a city BPO. Shradha married Gaurav Nanekar a year ago and was being harassed by her in-laws for Rs 4 lakh. Shradha accused her in-laws of subjecting her to physical and mental torture.

PSI Vilas Jadhav said Gaurav took Shradha to Shaniwarwada on April 12, where he consumed poison and forced Shradha to do the same. u00a0"They returned home after while. As soon as they stepped in, she collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

She (Shradha) was under going treatment till Sunday and after getting discharge, she approached the police and lodged a complaint against her husband," said Jadhav.

Officials said it was strange that nothing happened to Gaurav despite consuming the poison first. They feel he fooled Shradha into believing that that he too had consumed poison to end his life, and hide the real motive that he wanted to kill Shradha.

"We booked him (Gaurav) and summoned him to the police station. But soon after came, he complained of uneasiness and was admitted to the Sassoon hospital. We have deployed two constables outside the ward he was admitted to so that he can't escape," said Jadhav.

He said two of Shradha's in-laws, Meena Shankar Nanekar and Yogita Shankar Nanekar, were also booked. Both were residents of Kasba Peth.

A case was registered against the accused under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 309 (attempt to commit suicide), 498 (a) (cruelty against married woman by husband and in-laws) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.u00a0
