3 persons held with firearms, cartridges

The Crime Branch sleuths have arrested three persons on charges of allegedly possessing seven illegal firearms and 14 live cartridges. The accused were nabbed from Pashan-Sus Road


The arrested accused have been identified as Sopan Dinkar Chorghe (27), from Wangni village in Velha taluka, and his associates as Ankush Rajendra Pandure and Avinash Arun Khandagale, both from Ahmednagar.

Police said Chorghe is a criminal on police record and was also involved in the Sandeep Bandal murder case that took place at Kothrud in February 2008. He was absconding in an arms act case registered against him at Ahmednagar this year. Chorghe was also named as an accused in the recent firing incident at the Khed-Shivapur toll plaza.

Acting on a tip-off from police constable Tanaji Kamble, a team of Crime Branch officers, comprising of police inspector Balasaheb Kutwal, police constables Popat Gaikwad, Subhash Jadhav, Suresh Manchekar, Baba Karche, Shivraj Chavan, Kanta Bansode, Mangesh Gaikwad and Asif Patel, the officers first nabbed Chorghe and recovered two firearms and four live cartridges from him.

Based on the information received during Chorghe's interrogation, the other two accused were arrested later and the remaining weapons were recovered from their possession. Assistant Police Inspector Ranjeet Bhoite is investigating the case.u00a0
