The woman identified as Jaibul Shaikh, a resident of Janata Vasahat in Parvati area, poured kerosene on her body and set herself alight at her residence. Shaikh who sustained 100 per cent burn injuries is currently under going medical treatment at Sassoon Hospital.
According to the police, Suman Margale (28) had registered a complaint at Dattawadi police station stating that Shaikh had kidnapped her son Omkar a few days back. u00a0"Jaibul had taken Rs 30,000 from the complainant, as she wanted to set up a chicken shop in the area. However, after a few days, the complainant started nagging her to return the money," said police inspector Vijaysinh Gaikwad at Dattawadi police station.
Then on November 11, Margale's son went missing, and the parent's suspected Shaikh might have kidnapped their son, as she did not want to return the money, said Gaikwad. The parents approached the police station and registered a missing persons case and also expressed their suspicion of Shaikh's involvement in their complaint. Following which cops booked Shaikh under section 363 (kidnapping) of the IPC.
Meanwhile, people in the vicinity started talking about Shaikh's involvement in the alleged kidnapping and she was ashamed at the allegations. On Sunday evening, she allegedly poured kerosene and set herself on fire. Neighbours who witnessed the incident came to her aid and rushed her to the hospital.
Gaikwad said that the whereabouts of Omkar is still unknown, and a team has been formed to trace him, as police did not find him inside Shaikh's house. u00a0
