New Delhi: A man, posing as a major in the Indian Army, was arrested for duping more than five girls on the pretext of marriage, police said Tuesday.

Kislay Thakur, 38, resident of Amritsar in Punjab, was arrested Monday from Gurgaon where he had come to collect money from his latest victim's brother Syed Rizwan, who filed a complaint with the police June 10 this year.

"Thakur had already cheated four girls by presenting himself as a major in the Indian Army and changing his caste and creed on various matrimonial sites. This was his fifth victim," said Additional Commissioner of Police Ranvir Singh.

In the recent case, he had introduced himself to the victim, a resident of Janakpuri in west Delhi, as Major Ashiq Bashir, posted at Military Intelligence unit at Leh in Ladakh.

Rizwan, in his complaint to police, said that he came in contact with the accused while searching for a suitable groom for his sister.

Rizwan told police that the accused duped him of Rs.5.95 lakh on the pretext of booking a luxurious car as a gift for the marriage.

"On inquiry, the victim found that there was no officer of that name posted in Military Intelligence unit at Leh. He then approached the police," said the official.

During interrogation, the accused told police that he was not satisfied with his earnings, therefore, he decided to dupe people by posing as an army officer.

He was born in Bihar and his father retired as a Colonel from the army and presently runs a coaching centre in Amritsar.

After his studies, he worked as an assistant manager in a hotel in Amritsar and a finance company in Gurgaon. Later, he started working as an instructor at a coaching centre in Amritsar.
