Five students held in Haldia for ragging, abducting junior

Five senior students of the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology at Haldia in West Bengal's east Midnapore district were arrested on Saturday on charges of ragging and abducting a junior, police said


Kolkata: Five senior students of the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology at Haldia in West Bengal's east Midnapore district were arrested on Saturday on charges of ragging and abducting a junior, police said.

Ankit Kumar, a first year student at the institute was allegedly abducted, beaten up and left in an injured condition at Mecheda, around 45 km from Haldia on Friday, police said.

After police rescued him later in the evening, he was admitted to Haldia sub-divisional hospital.

According to Ankit Kumar, he was repeatedly ragged by seniors at the institute following which he lodged a complaint against them.

The institute swung into action, suspending five second and third year students.

Police said the complainant alleged that in retaliation the seniors assaulted him with the help of hired men.

The institute lodged an FIR at the Bhavanipur police station in Haldia and the accused were later arrested.
