A tiff between two lovers took a bloody turn on Saturday night and almost claimed the life of 35-year-old Reshma Tehseen Khan. Khan was lying in a pool of blood on the Pune-Bangalore highway after her jilted lover Sandeep mercilessly slit her throat.

Thanks to alert passers-by who informed the Bharati Vidyapeeth police, she was taken to the nearest hospital and was given immediate medical attention. A team of 12 doctors from the Sassoon Hospital worked tirelessly to save Khan's life.

The accused fled the scene immediately but was arrested by the Bharti Vidyapeeth police within hours of the incident. Khan is a resident of Ganj Peth. Her lover Sandeep Nivrutti Gavand (32) is also from the same area who drives an auto-rickshaw.

According to the police, Khan is married and works as a nurse in Naik hospital. She is currently staying with her uncle in Lohiyanagar, as her relationship with her husband was strained. She was having an affair with Gavand for the past few years. It was only recently that the two started having fights with each other.

Police Inspector Machindra Chavan from Bharati Vidyapeeth police station said, "Sandeep had gone to Khan's workplace on Saturday night around 9.30 pm. He borrowed his friend's auto and took Khan with him at the Daripool near Jambhulwadi on Pune-Bangalore highway where he assaulted her."

"Sandeep slit Khan's throat and left her lying in a pool of blood and he ran away from the spot. Some citizens passing by the area called up police control room at around 11 pm and informed them about a woman lying on the road. Accordingly our team reached the spot in three minutes after receiving the call. Afreen was immediately taken to the Bharti Vidyapeeth Hospital and later to Sassoon Hospital as she was seriously injured," PI Chavan said.

"We recovered a purse from the scene which had the contact number of Afreen's husband Tehseen Mohammad Khan. During the interrogation he told us that Afreen had an affair with a man called Sandeep. Accordingly, our team picked up Sandeep for interrogation who then confessed to have committed the crime," Chavan said. The police team involved in nabbing the accused comprised of Police Inspector Shrikant Shinde, Assistant Police Inspector Amol Devkar, Police Sub-Inspector Kalyan Yeole, Bapu Awghade, Police Constables Prasad Joshi and others.
