The constable of Kothrud police station was under severe stress due to the harassment; cops finally traced the man on Wednesday and arrested him
A woman constable at Kothrud police station underwent severe mental trauma in the last 10 days due to anonymous calls from a person.
Accused: Sanjay Rohite
Aarti Pate (named changed to protect identity) used to get at least 70-80 calls every day from a man later identified as Sanjay Rohite, who was nabbed on midnight of Wednesday, March 12, after a police team was tracked him for three hours.
"Rohite used to call me to just say he wanted to talk to you. When I told him I was a policewoman, he did not believe me and continued harassing me. I was very disturbed as he kept calling me every day, and I kept disconnecting his calls. He constantly changed handsets and SIM cards to make calls to me," said Aarti.
Aarti's concerned husband advised her to change her cell number, but she refused. "He was such a stubborn person that he didn't deter even after I told him that I was a police personnel. I thought if I let him go, he would be encouraged to keep doing this to others. I thought if he could harass me to such a great extent, what would he do to other common women?"
Aarti said. Her husband said, "She was so disturbed that I could not bear it. Both of us were angry and stressed as he nagged her constantly."
In order to trace him, the cops obtained his calls detail records, and spoke with the frequent callers they found in the list. Through them, they traced his residence and, upon reaching there, learnt that his family had disowned him. His brother gave the cops his current address.
Said Aarti, "Four of us, including Rekha Lande, Satish Paygude and Pranav Sankpal, went to his residence at Dhankavadi at 9 pm. He was not at home so we went three more times, but to no avail. We were about to come back but were held up due to the rains. Then we decided to make a last visit and we finally caught hold of him at 12.15 am."
Inspector Kalyanrao Vidhate, in charge of Kothrud police station, said that Rohite was arrested under section 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code and sections 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code for abusing via telephonic conversation.
"He was arrested last midnight. Prima facie inquiry revealed that Rohite hails from Solapur region and has been disowned by his mother and brother. He is 30 years old and works as a labourer in Gultekdi Market Yard. He has passed Std XII. We are investigating if this is his first crime.
We have demanded his original KYC (know your customer) details from his service operator, as we found discrepancies in his name and address details. If it turns out he has faked them, we will book him on additional charges of committing a fraud."
