Panaji: The police in Panaji on Tuesday arrested a 25-year-old woman for murdering her newborn daughter by smothering her soon after giving birth to her.
The accused Reshma Shaikh, a resident of Chimbel on the outskirts of Panaji, was arrested under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for the crime committed on December 12, the police said.
"We conducted the arrest after the post mortem report revealed that the newborn baby died due to 'mechanical compression of the nose and lips'," the police said.
