In a hit-and-run incident, a 76-year-old pedestrian died and a biker got injured on Tuesday night at BP Cross Road in Mulund West. The accused lives in the Mulund colony and allegedly pressed accelerator instead of breaks.
After the tragic incident, the passengers in the car ran away from the spot leaving the car behind. The injured scooty driver was rushed to a private hospital in Thane.
The deceased person has been identified as Tukaram Sawant (76), a resident of MG Road, Mulund.
The incident took place at 8.45 pm at BP Cross road when a car, having registration number MH-02-DZ-4986 came speeding and knocked off a scooter (MH-03-BX-7573) and then a pedestrian. The car then brushed off the compound wall of Gurukrupa housing society and crashed into the society gate. According to eyewitnesses, the impact was such that the scooty got squeezed in the accident.

"My father was a police sub-inspector and retired 15 years ago. He has a routine of going to a Shiva temple nearby. When yesterday he didn't come in time, I left home to look for him," said Savinay Sawant, elder son of deceased Tukaram Sawant.
"I knew of his usual 2-3 places where he would sit with his friends, while I was walking towards Devidayal Gardens I saw a crowd at the gate of one housing society," he added.
Savinay went ahead and saw a car crash at the gate and wrecked scooty. "I asked a cop at the spot about the incident, he described the injured person. I immediately showed him the picture of my father and he confirmed the shirt colour and asked me to go to MT Aagarwal Hospital," said Savinay.
Sawant succumbed to injuries at 9.45 pm while the biker was shifted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane. Tukaram Sawant (76), resident of Narmada Apartment at MG Road, Mulund. While the injured is identified as Bhavesh Dahiya, a resident of Mulund. He underwent surgery at Jupiter Hospital, he reportedly sustained pelvic bone and rib fractures.
After the incident, the terrified driver, Yadav, ran away from the spot and stood in the corner. According to cops, there were two occupants in the car. The 22-year-old, Amrish Yadav, a resident of Mulund Colony left his home and met his woman friend at Swapan Nagari. Primary investigation has revealed that Yadav was driving the car. However, the Sawant family claimed they were told by some eyewitnesses that a woman was driving the car.
"The women got into the car and allegedly told Amrish to have vadapav and cocktails at the station road. Amrish drove the car in the narrow lane but he was speeding too much," said an official.
"After dashing the scooty according to Accused he pressed accelerated inspite break and knocked off Sawant," he added.
The medical of the accused has been done. We suspect he was speeding around 100 km/hr, the official further said.
Cops have booked Amrish Yadav under IPC section 279 (rash driving), 304A (death due to negligence), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and section 184 (driving dangerously) of Motor Vehicle Act 1988.
"Yadav was arrested and produced in the Mulund court, he has been sent in judicial custody," said Kantilal Kothimbire, Senior Inspector of Mulund Police Station.
