The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a joint sub-registrar and his associate for allegedly taking bribe for the registration of two houses in Maharashtra's Thane district, an ACB official said on Thursday, reported the PTI.

A man had submitted documents for the registration of two flats, one belonging to him and another to his wife, at the registrar's office in Kalyan town of the district.

The 53-year-old joint sub-registrar allegedly demanded Rs 15,000 each for the registration of the two flats, Thane ACB's Deputy Superintendent of Police Pramod Jadhav said, as per the PTI.

After negotiations, the demand was brought down to Rs 12,000 and the man was asked to bring the money to the registrar's office on Wednesday.

The man then complained to the ACB.

The anti-graft agency laid a trap and caught the sub-registrar's 46-year-old associate while accepting Rs 12,000 on the former's behalf, the official said, the news agency reported on Thursday.

Both the accused were subsequently arrested and a case was registered against them under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, he added.

Meanwhile, in an another incident, the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) had earlier this week arrested an assistant police inspector based with Narpoli police station in Thane for accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh.

The police said the accused demanded Rs 5 lakhs and he was caught red hand while accepting 2 lakhs.

According to the police the arrested accused is Sharad Baban Pawar 37, an assistant police inspector posted with Narpoli police station in Bhiwandi.

The complainant in the case in his statement to police said that his son was arrested in an murder case by Narpoli police. A case was registered under section 302 (Punishment for murder) of the Indian penal code. The investigation of the said case was done by Pawar.

"Pawar had assured the complainant that he will help his son in the case. And also help to loosen the chargesheet and demanded Rs 5 lakh for the same.
