A Mumbai man was arrested for strangling a woman at a lodge. The man, aged 24, was identified as Soheb Kalam Sheikh, and was arrested by Navi Mumbai police for killing a 35-year-old woman at a lodge in Navi Mumbai's Turbhe, reported PTI. According to the report, the incident occurred on January 9 and Sheikh, a resident of Saki Naka, was taken into custody on Saturday.
The PTI report stated that during the initial investigation, it was discovered that Sheikh and the victim were in a relationship, and he was allegedly pressuring her to marry him. The police official revealed that Sheikh threatened the victim, claiming that he would share her private images with her family. Notably, he had already given images to her mother and sister, using blackmail as a form of pressure.
On January 8, the Mumbai man who was arrested and the woman got into a violent disagreement at a lodge. In a fit of rage, Sheikh allegedly strangled her before fleeing the scene. Following that, the Navi Mumbai police launched a detailed inquiry. Based on intelligence, they caught Sheikh and charged him with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, the report added.
Following his arrest, Sheikh was brought before a local court, which opted to hold him in police custody for a week.

In another incident from Thane city, a man was grievously injured after some unidentified persons fired at him. According to a report in PTI, the incident happened in the Kalwa area of Thane city.
The PTI report quoted officials saying that the incident happened on Monday night in Indira Nagar locality. They said that the accused fired at a man named Sandeep Pujari and fled the scene.
"Unidentified persons fired at the man, Sandeep Pujari, and fled from the scene. He was then rushed to the Kalwa Civic Hospital in a serious condition," an official told PTI. The official added, "The motive behind the firing is yet to be known. The police have formed several teams to trace the assailants."
He added that a case was registered at the Kalwa police in this connection, the PTI report stated.
